Milk protein. Makes a fast-drying waterproof tempera paint.

To make as a binder for artists’ use (all measurements by weight):
3 parts Casein powder
20 parts cold water
1 part Borax
5 parts hot water
3 parts Casein powder

Instructions
Mix the casein powder and cold water in a bowl. Soak for at least one hour.
In a seperate bowl, dissolve the borax in the hot water.
Stir the soaked casein until it becomes smooth and free of lumps.
Gradually add the borax solution to the casein mixture, stirring continuously.
Heat the mixture in a double boiler, heat to 82°C (180°F) for 10-15 minutes.
Remove it from the heat and allow it to cool.
Pre-wet dry pigments with small amounts of water, mixing with a palette knife till they reach a paste-like consistency.
Slowly add the casein solution to the pigment paste, mixing until you achieve desired consistency. Exact ratio of casein to pigment will vary depending on the pigment used. To test the mixture, apply a small amount of the paint to a substrate and let it dry.
If the pigment rubs off easily, add more casein solution.
Thin the paint with water if desired consistency for application.
